Stop Go Animation with Room 13

Today, Room 6 teamed up with Buddy class Room 13 to learn how to use Stop-motion animation. The ideas were creative and frantic, the teamwork outstanding and the enthusiasm overwhelming.

We looked at examples by legend Nick Parks (responsible for Chicken Run, Wallace and Gromit and other successful animations). The children discussed the content, planned the set and created the characters. The videos are to follow!

3D Shape presentations

The completion of our 3D space shapes brought an end to our work on shape. Some incredible stories of creativity, perseverance and discovery brought a successful close to a popular project. I was so impressed with Room 6's efforts to learn and construct the different designs, then present confidently to their peers, with a firm knowledge and understanding of their shapes.

STEAMS day

STEAMS day arrived in the senior syndicate with overwhelming success. STEAMS, the acronym taken to abbreviate Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Maths and Social Sciences was available to all the children last Wednesday.

The children opted in to various workshops, aimed to challenge their thinking, curiosity and discover through practical experiements and activities. Sessions ranged from problem solving, construction, coding, sports science, practical drama sessions, and even various cooking experiments.

Unfortunately, the weather wasn't quite so cooperative, which put a slight downer on the Farm visit, orienteering and Sports Science on offer. But in true Hampden Street style, the moods certainly were not dampened. Outstanding attitude from all the children, challenging their initial ideas and trying something new.

Huge credit must go to Karen Linyard for all her efforts in preparing the day, ensuring all workshops ran smoothly, and delivering some popular inspiring sessions for the children to get involved. It was great to see the higher level thinking on show, and all children involved challenging their initial concepts.

Sports in Term 2

Term 2 sports in room 6

Room 6 have thrusted into the sporting world in the last few weeks. On Mondays, Brenna from Nelson Hockey has been teaching us the basic stick skills to great success. The children have enjoyed learning dribbling skills and how to pass the ball. They look forward to competing in an inter-school hockey tournament in the forthcoming weeks.

Bodie from the 'No child left Inside' initiative has been introducing fundamental skills for Dodge and Basketball. We learnt the importance of spatial awareness, lowering our centre of mass for balance and using our eyes throughout the actions. Room 6 have listened intensely well, and participated with a superb attitude to all areas of fitness.

Cross Country continues in Term 2. With Intra-school competitions approaching, we are continuing our training on Monday, Wednesday and Fridays. It's awesome to see the positive attitudes on show, and children pushing their physical limits.

Genius Hour and China Projects

Genius Hour and China projects in Room 6 from Mr Skiperoo on Vimeo.

A fantastic end to Term 1 culminated in Genius Hour 1 and China projects. The children had been working independently for 5-6 weeks on various tasks and got to present and explain their findings.

Genius hour is a movement within many schools throughout the world that allows students to explore their own passions and encourages creativity in the classroom. It provides students a choice in what they learn during 1 hour a week for 5-6 weeks.

There were many discovery projects, learning about Egyptians, the worlds deadly diseases, and even World War 1. Many children developed skills in coding, using different materials for art, sewing, cooking and designing. Some members of Room 6 tried to educate others about healthy living, road safety and game play.

Some awesome projects for Term 1 taught the importance of planning, perseverance and learning from your experiences.
Sophie Sewing her way to success
Jeremy writing the first instalment of his enthralling crime thriller
Jessica writing the next chapter in her future award-winning chapter novel
Alana researching recipes
Alex and Alexandre encountering many problems with their life-size marble run
Ollie in preparations for his Sahara desert replica
Steph creating her own brand of Dolls clothing
Natalia creating her own healthy menus and homemade fruit drinks

Back of the Net!

We've been exploring Shape and Space this week, and trying to create our own nets. We soon realised that we'd need a lot more skills than just understanding shape. In order to design the perfect nets, we needed to measure accurately and use angles with confidence.

Shape and Space

Room 6 have started the term exploring the properties of shape. We looked at designing and making our own 3D shapes, attempting to name the different 2D shapes within them. We then separated them to explore the Net of the shape.

We researched the names of different shapes, then explored them creating the nets of 3D shapes. Room 6 really pushed their limits on the Chilli scale by designing complex 3D shapes. We presented our shapes to one another and identified the number of vertices, edges and faces.

Buddy Time with Room 13

Buddy Book worms
Room 6 have been very supportive of their Buddies this term, helping them out with a range of fun activities and challenges this term. We have been listening to our buddies read regularly and helping them with their high frequency words.

Miniball superstarsChildren from Room 6 helped Room 13 developing their movement and bouncing skills. They created short games to teach small skills. We have been focussing on movement and keeping balance with the ball bouncing to waist height.

Pic Collage to present learningRoom 13 have been using PicCollage to help present their understanding of the books they are reading. The children of Room 6 helped support their understanding and present in a visual manner. Some super teamwork!
