Events at HSS

Nelson Library visit
Today, Room 6 visited Nelson library to support our 40-book challenge. A typical warm summers day in Nelson greeted the HSS children in the short walk down. Penny was helpful in providing us with an insight to the incredible selection available. It was great to see so many young passionate readers and behaving impeccably well in a public place. Now the Room 6 bookworms are ready to take the challenge and try some new pieces of literature.

Where's Wooly?
A team of Business students from the Boys College visited Room 6 to test out the response to their new picture book 'Where's Wooly?' The boys had worked tirelessly to create a visual book aimed at children aged 4-13, based on the world famous 'Where's Wally?'

The book featured well-known NZ sites, with more localised characters. Room 6 proved a constructive audience, with clear feedback, ranging from insightful positives and valued negatives. We wish the boys every success in their new venture.

ASB Bank
A visit from ASB taught the members of Room 6 the value of being organised with money, planning ahead and investing wisely whilst young. Dan was awesome delivering an inspiring presentation focussed at the intrigued Room 6 crowd.

Swim Sports hits the Senior Syndicate

Harold visits HSS
The children learned about digital safety and the importance of restricting the amount of information we give away online. Harold the giraffe was in top comedy form along side presenter Ingrid in their state of the art new truck.

Nigel Beatson visits to inform us about Fiji
Jeremy's Dad very generously visited Room 6 to tell us about the terrible impact of Hurricane Winston on Fiji. As an engineer, he had recently returned from supporting the Fijian government in the redevelopment of major towns. He was very informative and entertaining in his delivery, and taught the children the significance of such an event on a poor nation.
Room 6 then continued to research the long-term problems of the natural disaster. We then presented in an informative manner to the rest of the Seniors in a syndicate assembly. An excellent team project by Room 6.

Repatriation Day, April 1st 2016
April 1st brought celebration and jubilation across Rooms 5 and 6, with the annual celebration of Repatriation day. With the Anglo-American teaching partnership of Mr Marston (Leeds, UK) and Mrs Bailey (Eugene, Oregon, USA), it was only right that we celebration the alliance and 'discovery of the new world', by Christopher Columbus et al. in 1492.
Rooms 5 and 6 commemorated the occasion at the chimes of 11 o'clock, by singing the Great British National anthem 'God Saved the Queen', followed by the infamous USA national anthem 'The Star Spangled Banner'. This was followed by the traditional Peanut Butter, Jam and Cucumber sandwiches (a blend of our nations national luncheon!). Children toasted their PBJC sandwiches in jubilation and respect in her majesty's honour.

This did turn out to be an almighty April Fools prank, but unsuspected by everyone. It was so successful, may Repatriation day continue!

Hockey in Schools

On Mondays, Brenna from Nelson Hockey has been teaching us the basic stick skills to great success. The children have enjoyed learning dribbling skills and how to pass the ball. They look forward to competing in an inter-school hockey tournament in the forthcoming weeks.

No Child Left Inside
Bodie from the 'No child left Inside' initiative has been introducing fundamental skills for Dodge and Basketball. We learnt the importance of spatial awareness, lowering our centre of mass for balance and using our eyes throughout the actions. Room 6 have listened intensely well, and participated with a superb attitude to all areas of fitness.

The Band perform live at Syndicate Assembly
Room 6 members Eli and Joey performed with the rest of the band at the Senior syndicate assembly. An awesome display by Georgie, Georgia BG, Triza, Nick, Lucy and Anna was enjoyed by all their peers, performing a lively version of 'Sugar' by Maroon 5.

Hockey at Saxton arena
Last Thursday, a whopping 63 Senior students (a third of the syndicate!) descended on Saxton arena in Stoke to compete with Nelson's finest in a competitive Hockey tournament. HSS entered 7 teams against schools from the local region.

There was a lot of talent on show, with HSS teams demonstrating an outstanding attitude throughout. Each team played seven games, with the over-riding victors Nelson Central school. A fantastic day out, and another great opportunity for children of this age to be exposed to competitive sport against their peers.
